I feel the need to celebrate a little today. Amy has always struggled with her braces. Once we found how to make her comfortable (Brace #3) she proceeded to start smashing through them. They would be remade 2 or even 3 times due to breakage. Her record?
- Quickest brace break: 11 days
- Longest lasting brace: 6 weeks 2 days
But THIS brace? Going on 4 months with no issues! Apparently our new orthotist really knows her stuff! Cocking her foot to the side really seems to have done the trick. But now after 4 months, we’re starting to have minor issues.
Last night at ballet class I was struggling to get her slipper on over her brace. (It was NOT going well.) The non-slip bottom on her brace was peeling off and getting stuck inside her slipper. Earlier that night it had rolled back in her shoe, and tripped her once as she ran without shoes down the hall.
Amy’s Daddy and I had already reglued it back on a couple times. But last night, in my frustration, I just ripped the whole sole off. Amy’s shock was a little funny.
“YOU RUINED IT!”
I shouldn’t have laughed, but she looked like a little outraged kitten. Then she started to cry, and I promised her I’d get it fixed. The slipper finally went on, and off she danced.
So, to keep my promise, today we arrived at Hangar Clinic. No appointment needed, although I did call to ensure a tech would be available for a walk-in.
In addition to the no-slip sole, the velcro tab that is glued down was starting to pull up too. They offered to switch out all her straps too, but they didn’t have any pink straps. So, we decided to wait on that and see how much longer they will last. (Because, PINK!)
As Amy and I sat in the waiting room and entertained ourselves, the tech took her brace back for a little TLC. After only a few minutes it was finished.
Brand new sole, and sticky velcro. Girl is good to go! Not having to get a new brace every few weeks is sure nice! I wonder how long it will last…
